Little sheepy cupcakes

I am going to be making some cakes for my friends little girls first birthday and although I haven’t said what design I’m going to do I’ve been thinking of some ideas.

I know she loves sheep and has a house full of sheep things so I thought these would be a good start to have a play with…I just never expected them to be so popular!

Since posting a photo on my Facebook page I had lots of positive comments about them, I surprised a friend at work with a box of 6 and I’ve been asked to make some for a charity coffee morning.

Although these do look pretty cute, they are surprisingly easy to make and for the 12 it only took me an hour and a half from baking to decorating.
I’m thinking of adapting the design to make a couple of other farm animals – cows and pigs.  When I get round to making them, I’ll show you my efforts.

The dream that created Pac-Man cupcakes

I’ve always had very vivid dreams and nearly every morning I can remember at least one of them. pac-man cupcakes
Usually they are garbled rubbish which at the time seemed perfectly normal though on reflection you think “I really should cut out cheese before bed”; but on the odd occasion a dream has given me an idea.

I got my first tattoo after dreaming it, I saw the design and where I was going to have it, so in the morning I woke up and drew it so that I wouldn’t forget.
Luckily the dream I had last night was a little less permanent and painful – I dreamt I made Pac-Man themed cupcakes.

I had plans to bake some cakes for a friend so I thought I’d bake these to and I’m glad I did because I was really happy how they came out for only a little effort.  It did help that I already had the icing mixed to the right colours so a few cutters, a little edible paint, and voilà! Pac-Man cupcakes.

I thought my cousins boyfriend will enjoy these as he likes retro gaming…and cakes.  Happy eating Calum.

Inspiration needed for a baker with no artistic talent, who needs to decorate a Christmas cake.

After finally making my Christmas cake and feeding it with a lot of alcohol in a short period of time, I’m now stuck with the dilemma of how to decorate it.

Last year was quite easy as I had been to a cake decorating course and we made our decoration ready to put on; unfortunately, this year I’m on my own.

I have basic skills with regard to my artistic talents.
You know those people who say they aren’t very good at drawing but are actually fantastic? Yep?  … well, I’m not one of them.
I’m in the realm of making snowmen, penguins and anything else that a 5 year old can design.

I do have a skill of being able to ice a cake extremely quickly and quite well (I was the fastest in our class!) but I’m not sure what to put on it.

I have gel colours, glitter, shapes, cutters, modelling tools, and my new addition of silver spray… all I need are some ideas.

Swirly Cupcake Decorating

I’m not the greatest cake decorator in the world but I do like to have a go.

One of the things I have always been disappointed in is the way that I ice my cupcakes. This is because although I have so many types of nozzles for my piping bag, I never had one of the big ones to do the pretty swirls like everyone else.

So last weekend my husband took me to out to go and buy some new nozzles for my piping bag that we have seen for pretty cheap and then I had to bake some cupcakes to decorate – just to test it out, obviously.

I used the recipe that I also used for my sisters cupcake wedding cake for the cakes and the buttercream icing and set about making pretty little cupcakes first thing on a bank holiday morning.

Although my first couple of iced cakes had to be eaten (best way to hide the evidence of cake decorating gone wrong) I managed to get the hang of it by the end and made them look pretty swirly. Then after adding a little sprinkle of pink glitter they were ready to be taken to work.

From people’s reactions to them I think they were quite impressed, though as the baker I could see all the little imperfections, they still went very quickly indeed.

As I only have less than a week at work before I go onto maternity leave I will have to start planning on what to make before I go. I am thinking of some chocolate muffins, which are sturdy and easy to transport, some pretty little cupcakes with plenty of swirly icing (just because I can) and maybe a cake – possibly a sponge but it could also be quick fruit cake.

I have 2 offices of staff to feed as my mom’s work colleagues are also really nice and I love visiting them, so I’m sure a delivery of cake will make them everyone happy and to say thank you for all the lovely comments and conversations I have had with people during my pregnancy.

Little ‘h’ cake pops

I am always fascinated by looking at what other people achieve with their cakes and I have recently been staring intently at my friend (and distant family member) Helen’s cake pops pictures!
She has just this week started up her own business finding the time even though she has two (cute) little kids and so far it seems to be good.

As you probably know I would love to have my own bakery but I’m unfortunately not that talented in the cake decorating department. Now this isn’t false modesty and I can create something that looks half decent with a little bit of fondant icing, cutters, glitter and colouring but I really don’t have the artistic flair needed for the fantastic cakes you see at weddings and birthdays.
If I we’re to ever get my business then I would love to make the cakes and let someone with the skills decorate them properly.

Helen though has a lot of skill! Hence whilst I am enjoying looking at her pictures of her cake pops.

I have not yet tried to make cake pops but they look and sound so good that I think I will throw aside my cupcake cases and try these instead. I like decorating small cakes because they are much easier to make effective without the skill needed for a large intricate cake… plus they sound tasty.
I’m not sure how my husband will take to cake pops after his reaction to cupcakes but it will be something new to try that I haven’t done before.

Anyway, if you want to have a good look at Helen’s cake pops and see what I am raving about (or even just to ‘like’ her page) then check it out:  Little h Cakes – Facebook Page
